Overall Principles for Generative AI Use
As Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to evolve, its integration into our daily operations offers unprecedented opportunities for innovation, efficiency and enhanced communication. At Michigan State University (MSU), we are committed to leveraging these technologies in ways that align with our institutional values of collaboration, equity, excellence, integrity and respect. This guidance outlines our approach to utilizing generative AI tools to support research and creative activities while upholding our ethical standards.
Goals
The MSU Ethics Institute will work with the Office of Research and Innovation to establish ethics research centers in strategic areas, foster research strengths in ethics, and support the ethical conduct of research across the University. Below, the MSU Ethics Institute strives to accomplish the following:
- Establish Ethics Research Centers: Establish and support five ethics centers with strategic foci on existing and emerging research stengths that connect with grand challenges within Miichigan and across the globe.
- Support Research Strengths in Ethics: Predict competitive research grants and fellowships for faculty research in ethics.
- Fund Student-led Ethics Research: Fund student-led, faculty-spervised, research projects in ethics.
- Created Endwoed Ethics Assistant Program: Establish an endowed Professorial Assistant Program for Ethics in the Honors College.
- Launch Faculty Fellows-in-Residence Program: Create and support an MSU Faculty Fellows-in-Residence Program.
- Establish Visiting Scholars Program: Establish and support a Visiting Fellows program that will attract major scholars in the field for a semester- or year- long residency at MSU.
- Identify and Support Ethics Faculty Affiliates: Indentify and fund a cohort of MSU Faculty Affiliates with the MSU Ethics Institute.
- Develop Comprehensive Research Ethics Training: Revise, manage, and develop a training program in research ethics for all MSU faculty, graduate and undergraduate students.
- Facilitate Cross-University Ethics Programs: Conduct cross-university programs on research and data ethics that serve the need for a wide variety of university stakeholders and faciliate development of new knowledge around data ethics.
- Support Mentoring and Safe Research Culture: Supporrt the graduate school and the university at large in creating formal mentoring programs for undregraduate, graduate and post-doctorla candidates and play an active part in creating a safe research culture.
